How to Target a Target Audience

Posted on 16 Oct 2008

This article is in response to one very commonly asked question, what is a target audience? The question is very vital to know and one that if manipulated right can make your business, but if neglected will break it.

Before you have to worry about what a target audience, you have to first worry about what product you'll be pushing and what you know about it. Many marketers have PhD's in BS, but most do not. For this PhD marketers they can skin through their product and briefly summarize it, and make sales. Those of you who are less educated in the field will fail miserably at this. I can always tell when i'm visiting a marketers site whether they actually know what they're talking about, or whether they red all the bold text then typed up a page of useless and often confusing smut. So if you're unsure about which of these you are, here is a crazy idea, read your products description in full.

Only after you've a product do you have to be concerned with what a target audience is. A target audience is the people in which you deduce will use the product the most. If your attempting to sell funny t-shirts than your target audience is most likely teens, so base your site and text around what would appeal to teens more, if you get orders from other age groups that great but appeal to the majority, because the majority is where your most sales will come from hence the reason it's called the majority. Also you'll have to choose keywords that will appeal to this group as well, because they're going to search for it in ways that relate to them so you've to use keywords they'll most commonly use regardless of how absurd it sounds to you.
